Many people talk about the mind-body connection and how what we think can affect our physical self. What I have found even more than the mental connection, is that the emotions rule the body. When I am grieving or angry, my body plays the stories out through illness or injury. This also works in the reverse: when I take physical action, I am able to reroute my emotions and to use that energy productively.

In my new book, Yogalosophy For Inner Strength: 12 Weeks to Heal Your Heart and Embrace Joy, I provide action exercises, meditations, recipes, creative activities and natural DIY prescriptions for getting your emotional body into shape.

Here are five ways to embody emotional wellness:

1. Claim your solitude.
Have you ever heard the quote, “Don’t just do something, sit there?” Before you find a way to channel your emotional energy, you must take time to be still and actually feel. Meditation is a simple tool for becoming present.

It was Helen Hunt who taught me to incorporate a consistent meditation practice. Her consistency – even when she was at her busiest and most public – was inspiration to me. It was a reminder that no matter how public your life is, you must have a private life that you return to.

When I went through a break-up last year, I was jonesing for my partner. But just like going to the gym, I learned to sit with this craving daily. I learned to make friends with my desperation. Eventually, I gained a sense of mastery over the feeling, and soon sitting with the feeling allowed me to claim it. In so doing, I found the comfort and power of being in solitude.

2. Be your own mother.
I think of exercise as the father of the body and nutrition as the mother. On a very basic level, self-mothering means nourishing yourself. I remember hearing that the mother/child relationship was the one relationship we make to break. Therefore, at some point, no matter how much you love your own mother, you must step up and begin to give yourself a foundation of emotional nurturing.

In the old days when I was an actress myself, I would deprive myself of the nurture I so needed. I literally starved myself in the ’80s, hoping that the large feelings I was having would disappear with each pound that I lost. After years of struggling with body image, first being emaciated and later gaining 50 lbs., I finally leveled out.

To my surprise, it was not through dieting, but by consuming a healthy diet of whole foods that allowed my body to fall into place quite naturally. I took care to hold myself in kindness, the way a good mother would, and to fill myself with delicious healthy and hearty foods that satisfied me. I now enjoy the feeling of being fed. Cooking yourself a meal is a wonderful way to put mothering into action.

YOUR EMOTIONAL WELLNESS ACTION: COOK A HEALTHY DISH FOR YOURSELF

Here is a heart-healthy recipe from my new book:

Roasted Root Vegetables

2 carrots
2 beets
1 yam
1 parsnip
Olive oil (to coat vegetables)
Fresh rosemary
2 tbsp. balsamic vinegar
Salt & pepper

1. Heat oven to 450°F.

2. Chop vegetables into 1-inch squares. Combine in a bowl and coat with the olive oil, rosemary and vinegar.

3. Roast the veggies until browned. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

3. Jump start your heart by playing like a kid.
Your body is an amazing tool. One of the best ways to lift your spirits and elevate your mood is to get your body moving and to get your heart pumping blood to all your extremities.

Yoga poses like wheel or bridge will lift your mood by opening your chest cavity. Walking or spinning is sure to get your heart pumping. But nothing moves your heart quite like play. Finding a recreational activity that brings you back to when you were a kid is one of the best ways to find contentment.

Remember when you were young and you would play so hard all day? When the days seemed to go on forever, and at the end of the day you felt totally and completely touched inside and out? I like to find that feeling as an adult.

I remember the year when I turned 25. For my birthday, I decided that I was going to have a giant game of Capture the Flag in the park. I invited all my friends, and after a warm-up round of Simon Says we split into teams and had massive fun playing the game all day long. I was getting calls all week from people saying how much fun they had, and how sore their bodies were.

We weren’t playing the game for a workout, we were playing the game for fun. Becoming child-like has many benefits. It brings you into a space of openness, possibility and presence.

YOUR EMOTIONAL WELLNESS ACTION: PLAY!

4. Widen your circle.
Friendship and community is the foundation of service. Loving and being loved is essential to your health and your happiness. No matter how glamorous it can look from the outside and no matter what your #squad looks like, we all need supportive, loving friends who are willing to hold space for us, be our witness, share their stories with us, and uplift us by holding us to the highest sense of our true nature.

I know firsthand that the Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Chelsea Handler, Sandra Bullock, Sia #squad is supporting in just that way. It feels heartfelt. It is important to surround yourself with supportive friends, and to be a witness and a supporter.

The physical action that you can do daily is hug. Hugging lowers the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol and increases the level of the “love hormone,” oxytocin. According to one study, a 10-second hug lowers the risk of heart disease, for it boosts your immune system, eases depression, fights fatigue and reduces stress, increasing your happiness and emotional vitality.

5. Follow your heart’s desire.
Nobody knows what makes your heart sing like you do. You have a special place on the planet that is yours alone, and your particular vantage point has value in this world. We learn from one another in this way. Become aligned with your joy.

When you are on purpose, you contribute to the world by simply being you. It’s essential to find your connection to that joy and to follow your heart. Even when it doesn’t make sense to anyone else, I encourage you to listen to the small voice inside. The outside world will always question it, but you can find a touchstone within.

I find that having a power object reminds me to stay connected to my heart. I have a rose quartz crystal that I can put in my pocket. I also have a ring that I got myself, which represents protection. Staying open to what your heart wants requires consistent attention. Listen and learn.

EMOTIONAL WELLNESS ACTION: FIND A POWER OBJECT

Emotions are so powerful. What we feel can plunge us to our depths and motivate us beyond our wildest dreams. Learning to harness this powerful energy will bring you to a state of self-mastery.

Hey, hey everyone, thank you so much for your kind and supportive comments, emails and texts over our baby news! I was planning on waiting to share until we reached the halfway mark like last time, but couldn’t keep my lips sealed any longer. We are unbelievably grateful and excited, and, ok, a little scared to face the wrath of a newborn’s sleep schedule again (wowee, I think I just finished suppressing the memories from last time!)

I decided to use Mother’s Day as an excuse to play hooky for the weekend, which is why today’s post is coming at you a day late. I blame the gorgeous weather which greeted us on Friday morning and lasted through Sunday. Lincoln and I spent the entire day outside on Friday then wrapped the evening up with a fire and s’mores when Ben got home. Sweet, sweet summer!!!

IMG_8567

This was the little man’s first s’more and darnit, he wasn’t head over heels! I guess I can’t blame him when gooey, toasted marshmallows are sandwiched between allergy-friendly graham crackers and chocolate, poor kid. He tried one then opted for a couple un-toasted marshmallows after that. ????

IMG_8555

I personally didn’t hate the gluten and dairy-free graham crackers and chocolate, and had a few naked s’mores (the mallows weren’t GF) myself. Man, what a busted bunch we are! ????

IMG_8565

The downtown Farmer’s Market opened for the season on Saturday (wohoo!) so my Mom, Lincoln and I braved the crowds for a visit.

IMG_8581

Between some construction happening on the street squeezing everyone just a liiittle closer together, and what felt like a record opening day attendance, it was a mad house. Lincoln took one look as we walked out the parking garage doors and said, “too many people, Mommy!” The booths were so crazy that the only thing I walked away with was a coffee!

IMG_8570-1

The stroll Lincoln and I took on Sunday morning was, thankfully, a lot quieter. Just a zip around the block in the sunshine while Ben got some stuff ready for the Mother’s Day lunch we ended up hosting for family at the last minute.

IMG_8586

The kids played around in the yard while the Moms got to relax and eat a fantastic spread that everyone contributed to. Ben handled the burgers and beans, my Mom brought her famous potato salad, and I supplied the pasta salad, which I ended up eating roughly 400 bowls of over the course of the day. Hands down my favorite summertime dish (psst: I left the parmesan cheese out of the homemade spice mix since we have multi kids with dairy allergies in the family, and I liked it even better without it!)

IMG_8589

While the kids may not have looked it (hello, nap time!) we sure had a fun afternoon spending time together. I can’t wait for many more back deck hangouts in the warm summer months to come!

And you better believe I’ll be serving Homemade Brat Burgers with Gluten-Free Beer-Braised Caramelized Onions at the majority of them – this is my new go-to grilling recipe!!!

Homemade bratwurst patties made from pork and spices are topped with luscious, beer-braised caramelized onions (read below for my thoughts on GF beer,) to create the most craveable dish that has ever come from my grill. There, I said it. This clean recipe is not only gluten and dairy-free, but seriously easy and quick. Did I mention toddler friendly? Lincoln wolfed these down!

Homemade Brat Burgers with Gluten-Free Beer-Braised Caramelized Onions are homemade brat patties (just pork and spices,) topped with luscious, gluten-free beer-spiked onions. You'll be making this easy grilling recipe all summer long! | iowagirleats.com

I must admit this is a bit of a cheater recipe since I already developed the homemade bratwurst mixture for the Cheddar Brat Meatballs (which you guys looooved,) I shared a few months ago. After musing about the not so stellar ingredient list in my go-to, store-bought, gluten-free bratwurst in last week’s Virtual Grocery Shopping post, a reader inspired me to turn my homemade brat mixture into patties and the rest is history.

After grilling these burgers up for the first time I thought they could use a hint of beer and onion flavor, which you traditionally boil brats in before grilling. Enter beer-braised caramelized onions. OH YES! Were talking seared onions simmered in gluten-free beer until golden brown, sticky-sweet, and perfectly caramelized. I don’t normally acknowledge a world in which brats aren’t buried under a blanket of tangy mustard, but these burgers topped with beer-braised caramelized onions slay the traditional combo.

Aside from the taste, there’s something deeply satisfying about making something at home that’s traditionally thought of as something you can only buy at the store. The homemade bratwurst patties tastes just like my favorite store-bought brats but only contain pork and spices. No preservatives (besides salt,) no sugar, no additives – just real food. Gotta try this unique grilling recipe, friends!

Start by getting the beer-braised caramelized onions going. Add 1 jumbo sliced sweet onion to 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat then saute until the onions are golden brown, 10 minutes.

Homemade-Brat-Burgers-with-Gluten-Free-Beer-Braised-Caramelized-Onions-iowagirleats-04

Next add 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce, salt, and a 12oz bottle of gluten-free beer.

NOTE: If you have Celiac Disease I DO NOT recommend drinking or using “gluten-removed” or “gluten-reduced” beers like Omission, Glutiny, etc. I used to drink gluten-removed beers back when I was first diagnosed with CD and 100% know it was one of the reasons I was staying sick vs getting well. They aren’t consistently low enough in gluten ppm for people with CD or a serious gluten intolerance to safely drink. Instead, use a beer that’s brewed with gluten-free grains like rice, sorghum, etc.

If you aren’t gluten-free, you can just use your favorite beer!

Turn the heat down to medium then simmer until the onions are tender and the beer is nearly absorbed, 10-15 minutes.

Homemade-Brat-Burgers-with-Gluten-Free-Beer-Braised-Caramelized-Onions-iowagirleats-06

Meanwhile, mix up the brat burger patties. That’s just 1lb ground pork mixed with 3/4 teaspoon each coriander, ground sage, dry mustard, and salt, and 1/4 teaspoon each dried rosemary, paprika, white pepper, and nutmeg. SO EASY!!!!

Homemade-Brat-Burgers-with-Gluten-Free-Beer-Braised-Caramelized-Onions-iowagirleats-07

Form the mixture into four patties – they’ll be a little soft, but that’s ok – then spray the tops with nonstick spray and grill for 4-5 minutes per side. FYI, the way to get great grill marks is to heat your grill over high heat then turn it down to medium just before adding the patties!

Place the patties onto buns then top with a mountain of beer-braised caramelized onions, and dig in!

Description

Homemade Brat Burgers with Gluten-Free Beer-Braised Caramelized Onions are homemade brat patties (just pork and spices,) topped with luscious, gluten-free beer-spiked onions. You’ll be making this easy grilling recipe all summer long!

Ingredients

serves 4

  • 1lb ground pork
  • 3/4 teaspoon coriander
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground sage
  • 3/4 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed between your fingers
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 jumbo sweet onion
  • 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
  • 12oz (1 bottle) gluten-free beer (I used New Grist Pilsner)
  • 4 buns

Directions

  1. Heat extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions then saute until evenly caramelized, 10 minutes. Add beer, worcestershire sauce, and a little salt then bring to a boil. Turn heat down to medium then simmer until onions are tender and beer has nearly been absorbed, 10-15 minutes. Taste then add salt if necessary and set aside.
  2. While the onions are simmering, preheat grill on high heat for at least 10 minutes (I like to let my grill get to 400-450 degrees.) Combine pork and spices – coriander through nutmeg – then form mixture into 4 patties – patties will be soft, but that’s ok. Turn grill down to medium heat then spray tops of patties with nonstick spray. Place patties sprayed-side down on the grill then cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Place brat burgers onto buns then top with beer-braised caramelized onions and serve.

Notes

  • The fat content in ground pork can vary wildly, so don’t be surprised if your burgers shrink up a bit.

Smell As Fresh As A Daisy

Well as Joliese is currently out of stock – I found this review of a tanner from someone with VERY pale skin – so I thought I would share it with you;  (Remember if your skin type is normal or olive it will be much faster than described below)

– “I was a little bit sceptical because I looked at their internet site and saw all these pictures of models and thought these girls often look so perfect? I don’t think they require a product like this. So, I decided to grab a tube mainly because now they provide a free of charge trial.  So I paid the normal shipping and handling (a few bucks) and then after two days I got the packet shipped right to my home.

So I took the tube and put on some of the lotion all over after ex-foliating.  That was all I had to do.  I didn’t see very much effect on my skin initially but one thing that is wonderful.  The cream doesn’t smell of chemicals – you may laugh at this but most of the other sunless tanning products I have tried prior to this had a bad smell and I didn’t want to use them simply because it was just too chemically oriented for me.  Idol tan smells very much like some nice citrus fruit and my boyfriend even asked me why I smell so fresh these days.  Ha 😉

But darker skin?  Nope, couldn’t see any changes.  But ok, that was just the very first day so I didn’t expect this would function like a magic cream so onto to the next day.  Exact same procedure.  Cream on skin and finished.  On day two, I looked in the mirror and I found I could see a slight change in my color.  My skin definitely looked darker, not as dark as I wanted it to be but it was darker.  From this day on I truly believed in the Idol Tan lotion!

To make a long story short, following three more days.  I had the skin color I really wanted to have. It may sound strange to others but for me a dream come true, normal darkening tanners streak for me or they come off in 2 days.  For me (with a very pale skin) this Idol Tan was amazing.  The attractiveness of the tan increasing over a few days meant the darker colour was more natural, didn’t look fake and of course was completely streak free.

So now all I’m doing is applying it once weekly just after a shower.  Sometimes I exfoliate, but to be honest, I don’t always have to, and the great thing is – it lasts for a while (unlike the previous stainers I had been using)

If you have the same issue like me (pale skin) – I actually encourage you to get the free trial of Idol Tan. It worked for me so I can’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be great for you.  Of course if don’t get on with it you’ll be able to send it back and all you’ve just lost is the money for delivery.  I feel this is totally worth it should you consider what it could change in your life, self-confidence and of course it will make you look younger ;-)”

I hope that give some insight into the product – let me know if you have any questions.

Great Feedback on Dark ‘Streak Free’ Tanning

This really is the best.  It seems that Joliese is becoming the most popular dark tanning lotion out there.  Its not only because its a salon product that celebrities seem to be using and endorsing (have you noticed how great their tans are now – but with beautiful skin), no I think its simply the quality of the product.   Its more expensive than your high street off the shelf bottle – but it does the following:

  1. Tans darker and lasts longer than other products.
  2. Is suitable for all skin types – pale, dark or olive.
  3. Its applied using spray – so its looks even all over your body. (Thin layers is the trick)
  4. Completely streak free!
  5. It feels smooth on your skin.

Treat yourself here – you deserve it!

Don’t forget  – quote “darker” when you order and you’ll get a big discount.

Tan Thin – What is it and how does it work?

Firstly its not a tanner!  It’s a thinning anti cellulite cream.  Once absorbed it uses the heat of the sun to produce a thermogenic reaction which melts fat at the skin level.  Through the absorption it shrinks the cells so that lipids are released and carried away in the bloodstream.

Applying it

Rub it on all round areas where you could get cellulite, the backs of thighs and arms for example.  Although the name implies that you should lie in the sun to activate it – its not necessary and in fact natural body heat will do the job.

If you do want to sun bathe – then its important to note there is no sunscreen in it.  The best approach is to rub it and let absorb, and then apply sunscreen

How long?

Before you see results – with daily applications you should notice results in 4 weeks.

St Tropez not as good as Joliese?

Here’s some feedback from a St Tropez user who’s just tried Joliese..

St Tropez is great but the tan doesn’t last very long, so I’ve been looking for something else for a while.
I ordered Joliese (a bit more expensive – but hey its my skin). Some of my friends have used it and its famous in salons for celebrities.
It comes as a spray which is a bit different as I usually use a mousse, but surprisingly it was really easy to use. It went on very even (see how to apply) and the whole process was a lot quicker than using a cream and I was able to cover my whole body without any streaks.
Two things to note. Firstly it moisturised really nicely and so my skin immediately felt smooth. Secondly – it dried really quickly and so there was no risk of smudging or anything.
Overall I’m really pleased with it – the tan lasts longer (over a week), and its very deep and natural. I got a lot of comments the next week from the girls – as it really looks like I’ve been under the sun for a week.

How to apply Mousse, Spray, Creams and Lotions

Self tanning mousse, cream and lotions has dye in it which is called DHA, so it will be important to remove all items away from the area where you are going to use the solution.  Many people use their self tanning mousse while standing in the shower or bath tub so that the dye does not get on the bathroom floor or on any of the items in the bathroom.

Remove hair before tanning.  For women, shaving your legs before you use the lotions will give you a smoother tan. Use a razor that does not take off hair below the pores.  Some people find that using a hair removal solution the day before they use a self tanning mousse is very effective.

Shower using a soap that does not have oil in it.  Removing oils from the body will help you to achieve a smooth tan on your body.

Self tanning mousse, cream and lotions

Read the instructions for application and maintenance of your tan carefully.  Manufacturers of tanning solution include different chemicals and ingredients in the solution and there are different application requirements.  However the ones on this site only contain DHA (a natural sugar which is the safest method of tanning available).  It is also important to test a patch of skin with the mousse or cream to see what the effect of the solution will be.

The instructions will give you information for the type of protection to use on your hands when you apply the tanner. Some manufacturers suggest using latex gloves when applying the solution.  Other manufacturers suggest putting a protective gel or coating on the palms of your hands to keep from staining your hands with the dye.  Either way watch out you don’t end up with white hands at the end.

Self tanning lotions come in different shades and tones. If you have never used a sunless tanner before, you may want to start with a lighter tone to see how your skin will react to the tanning lotion. When you are comparing solutions, choose one that is formulated for people with your skin tone.   A person with Auburn or Red hair will tend to tan in more red tones and will need to look to a solution that has the word “ash” in it.  This dye tones red tones down and will give you a more natural look when it is used.

Most of the tanning lotions made are time activated.  They will stop working after they have been on the body for a specific length of time.   The instructions on the packaging will tell you how long to keep the solution on your body.  It will be important to put the solution on your body as quickly and smoothly as possible.  Remember that if you rub the solution into your body, it will go deeper into your pores and create a darker coloring.  To avoid streaking or splotchy color, rub the lotion evenly over your body or have a friend rub the solution on for you.  Where you do get a streak use a body buffer to smooth it out afterwards.

There are many excellent sunless tanner products available that will meet a personal needs and desire for a smooth and natural looking tan. However, it will be important that you test products on small parts of your body to see how they react to your skin.   Once you have found the best solution that meets your needs, make sure that you get a supply of the tanner to last through at least one season.  The one I’ve most success with is Joliese – and its an easy to use spray on tanner.

Best Self Tanner for Streak Free Application

At any time of the year, you too can have a beautiful and deep rich tan. All it takes is a sunless tanning lotion or a really great cruise in the sun. A dark tanning lotion can also make the skin look more natural as well, and can help you feel young and healthy without having to go out in the sun. It’s possible to self apply such a lotion without leaving streaks, too.
Before going out to purchase a product for tanning your skin, consider what it is you want from your tan. Do you want to look sun kissed, golden, bronzed? Or are you looking to sport and show off a deep rich Caribbean colour? Once you know what you want from your tan, it’s time to buy the right formula.

Best Self Tanner

Products that have thick creams or come as a gel are perfect for easy application.  A gel or thick cream is easier to apply and there is less chance of run-off going to other body parts or getting on clothing and causing a stain. Many people don’t intend to apply suntan lotion to their armpits or upper chest, so that their tans will look more natural.
When it comes to sunless tanning creams and lotions, have a shower first.  It’s important when applying any tan lotion that you exfoliate and get rid of the dead skin cells that often coat the body. Use a body polishing bathing soap rather than just a loofa.  You’ll want to apply any sort of tan lotion to a fresh layer of skin.
The best self tanner will come with a quality tinting agent called DHA in it’s formula. This helps to make sure that you can see where you are applying your lotion. It’s best to apply the lotion in one smooth motion, rather than going over the same area accidentally and causing streaking.
When applying your lotion, rub it around in a circular motion. Start with the tops of your feet and work your way slowly up the body.  Do each individual body part at a time, rather than trying to apply the cream quickly all over and hoping to go over it again later.  Some products work just fine if you haven’t shaved before using them, while others may need your body to be as smooth as possible.
One of the biggest concerns of course when it comes to tanning lotions is that of streaking.  However, some products actually streak while they are setting because they have a certain thickness to them or a special chemical agent that just streaks.  Joliese and Idol tan are the best self tanner products I know that won’t streak at all.  If you do get any that still appear – a buffer or a body polishing cloth will smooth it off.  (Only do it when its dry)
Using the best self tanner lotion or any other tanning product often means you should be checking to see if the product includes a moisturizing agent like in Joliese or Idol tan. The mosturizer is really important for your skin, but also to ensure that the tan is gradual and natural.  The last thing you want is for to be obvious that you’ve just just applied some.  Take your time, build up gradually and with either Joliese or Idol tan, you can be confident of being streak free.

Dark Tanning Lotion – Best Self Tanner for Celebs

Of course we would all enjoy a few days a week at the beach just relaxing and sunbathing, resulting in a great golden tan, but who has time for that? Fortunately there are sunless tanner products available on the market that will give you the darker glow you want for just a few dollars and a few minutes of your time.

Dark Tanning Lotion

A sunless tanner is the perfect solution to sunbathing and expensive tanning bed sessions because it is safe and because it works. Even Hollywood stars whose lifestyles often demand having a near perfect tan, endorse the use of sunless tanner. Both sunbathing outdoors as well as the use of indoor tanning beds is not considered safe anymore because these methods can cause skin cancer and premature aging. A sunless tanner is simply a lotion, cream or spray that you can apply at home or have professionally applied at a salon.

The dark tanning lotion that I recommend uses a chemical called DHA (dihydroxyacetone) to brown your outer skin cells.  The chemical doesn’t reach as deeply into your skin as ultraviolet rays and comes off with your dead skin cells. A sunless tanner works more quickly than ultraviolet rays, too, because it is simply coloring the surface of your skin. Ultraviolet needs to work on the melanin underneath your outer skin layers and this takes time to reach.  This dark tanning lotion takes it one step further – and looks really deep, natural and original.
There are still products that you can purchase at any department store and apply at home that will turn your skin orange, but the best dark tanning lotion products won’t do this.   Research and technology over the past several years has made this problem less likely, but beware of unusually lowly priced sunless tanner products. The best thing to do is test a new self tanner product on less visible part of your skin to ensure that it gives you the results you desire before applying it all over.  The best self tanner I have come across todate is Joliese or Idol tan.
Keep in mind that the best self tanner isn’t necessarily the most expensive. Your skin is different from the next person’s skin and you will each get a different result from the same product. A sunless tanner typically shows the best results on someone with fair to medium skin tones and little blemishes or freckling.  A good self tanner product, however, will work on almost every skin type.
When applying a sunless tanner you will want to make sure that it is spread evenly over your entire body, otherwise you will have streaks and spots. A good way to do this is to use a bath sponge, which will also help to keep you from putting too much product on and help to keep you from getting the sunless tanner on the palms of your hands or bottoms of your feet as these are places that do not naturally tan and even the best self tanner will turn them orange. Get someone to help apply the tanner to your back and other hard to reach places.
Sunless tanning products don’t contain any sunblock, so it is still necessary if you are going to be out in the sun to be protected against the ultraviolet rays. Stay out of the sun as much as possible, or at least always use an SPF 30 or higher sunblock. Don’t take chances with your body and your youth. Use a great sunless tanner to get that beautiful golden glow.

Sunless Tanner – The Basics You Need To Know

Basic tanners are temporary tanning or fake tanning options.  These come in powders, sprays, lotions, gels, mousses and moisturizers.  Once applied, they create a gradual tan that can be removed with soap and water.  Like make-up, these products tint your skin only until they are washed off.

A Sunless Tanner is a more recent trend of lotions or moisturisers containing a gradual tanning agent.  The increase in color is usually observable after the first use, but will darken the more the product is used.

Air Brush tanning is a spray-on-tan done by a professional normally in a booth of some kind.  It can last several days fading with every shower.  It is used for special occasions or to get a quick dark tan.  At-home airbrush tanning kits and aerosol mists are also now available and should be used with care unless you want your walls to be brown.

Sunless Tanner

The most effective sunless tanner products available are those that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient.  DHA is a colorless sugar that interacts with the dead cells in the skin.  As the sugar interacts with the dead cells, a color change occurs.  This normally lasts about five to seven days from the initial application.

Every day, millions of dead skin cells are sloughed off or worn away from the surface of your skin.  In fact, every 35 to 45 days, you have an entirely new epidermis.  This is why tans from sunless- or self-tanning lotions will gradually fade — as the dead cells are worn away, so is your tan.  For this reason, most of these products suggest that you reapply the sunless tanner – or self-tanner about every three days to maintain your tan.

Its also the reason why a sunless tanner (containing DHA) is also the safest to use, and in fact DHA is the only chemical approved by the FDA.

The ones we have had most success with are Joliese and Idol Tan.  Both of these are available online, and are not like products available in the shops which can turn your skin orange.
