Hey, hey everyone, thank you so much for your kind and supportive comments, emails and texts over our baby news! I was planning on waiting to share until we reached the halfway mark like last time, but couldn’t keep my lips sealed any longer. We are unbelievably grateful and excited, and, ok, a little scared to face the wrath of a newborn’s sleep schedule again (wowee, I think I just finished suppressing the memories from last time!)

I decided to use Mother’s Day as an excuse to play hooky for the weekend, which is why today’s post is coming at you a day late. I blame the gorgeous weather which greeted us on Friday morning and lasted through Sunday. Lincoln and I spent the entire day outside on Friday then wrapped the evening up with a fire and s’mores when Ben got home. Sweet, sweet summer!!!

IMG_8567

This was the little man’s first s’more and darnit, he wasn’t head over heels! I guess I can’t blame him when gooey, toasted marshmallows are sandwiched between allergy-friendly graham crackers and chocolate, poor kid. He tried one then opted for a couple un-toasted marshmallows after that. ????

IMG_8555

I personally didn’t hate the gluten and dairy-free graham crackers and chocolate, and had a few naked s’mores (the mallows weren’t GF) myself. Man, what a busted bunch we are! ????

IMG_8565

The downtown Farmer’s Market opened for the season on Saturday (wohoo!) so my Mom, Lincoln and I braved the crowds for a visit.

IMG_8581

Between some construction happening on the street squeezing everyone just a liiittle closer together, and what felt like a record opening day attendance, it was a mad house. Lincoln took one look as we walked out the parking garage doors and said, “too many people, Mommy!” The booths were so crazy that the only thing I walked away with was a coffee!

IMG_8570-1

The stroll Lincoln and I took on Sunday morning was, thankfully, a lot quieter. Just a zip around the block in the sunshine while Ben got some stuff ready for the Mother’s Day lunch we ended up hosting for family at the last minute.

IMG_8586

The kids played around in the yard while the Moms got to relax and eat a fantastic spread that everyone contributed to. Ben handled the burgers and beans, my Mom brought her famous potato salad, and I supplied the pasta salad, which I ended up eating roughly 400 bowls of over the course of the day. Hands down my favorite summertime dish (psst: I left the parmesan cheese out of the homemade spice mix since we have multi kids with dairy allergies in the family, and I liked it even better without it!)

IMG_8589

While the kids may not have looked it (hello, nap time!) we sure had a fun afternoon spending time together. I can’t wait for many more back deck hangouts in the warm summer months to come!

And you better believe I’ll be serving Homemade Brat Burgers with Gluten-Free Beer-Braised Caramelized Onions at the majority of them – this is my new go-to grilling recipe!!!

Homemade bratwurst patties made from pork and spices are topped with luscious, beer-braised caramelized onions (read below for my thoughts on GF beer,) to create the most craveable dish that has ever come from my grill. There, I said it. This clean recipe is not only gluten and dairy-free, but seriously easy and quick. Did I mention toddler friendly? Lincoln wolfed these down!

I must admit this is a bit of a cheater recipe since I already developed the homemade bratwurst mixture for the Cheddar Brat Meatballs (which you guys looooved,) I shared a few months ago. After musing about the not so stellar ingredient list in my go-to, store-bought, gluten-free bratwurst in last week’s Virtual Grocery Shopping post, a reader inspired me to turn my homemade brat mixture into patties and the rest is history.

After grilling these burgers up for the first time I thought they could use a hint of beer and onion flavor, which you traditionally boil brats in before grilling. Enter beer-braised caramelized onions. OH YES! Were talking seared onions simmered in gluten-free beer until golden brown, sticky-sweet, and perfectly caramelized. I don’t normally acknowledge a world in which brats aren’t buried under a blanket of tangy mustard, but these burgers topped with beer-braised caramelized onions slay the traditional combo.

Aside from the taste, there’s something deeply satisfying about making something at home that’s traditionally thought of as something you can only buy at the store. The homemade bratwurst patties tastes just like my favorite store-bought brats but only contain pork and spices. No preservatives (besides salt,) no sugar, no additives – just real food. Gotta try this unique grilling recipe, friends!

Start by getting the beer-braised caramelized onions going. Add 1 jumbo sliced sweet onion to 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat then saute until the onions are golden brown, 10 minutes.

Next add 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce, salt, and a 12oz bottle of gluten-free beer.

NOTE: If you have Celiac Disease I DO NOT recommend drinking or using “gluten-removed” or “gluten-reduced” beers like Omission, Glutiny, etc. I used to drink gluten-removed beers back when I was first diagnosed with CD and 100% know it was one of the reasons I was staying sick vs getting well. They aren’t consistently low enough in gluten ppm for people with CD or a serious gluten intolerance to safely drink. Instead, use a beer that’s brewed with gluten-free grains like rice, sorghum, etc.

If you aren’t gluten-free, you can just use your favorite beer!

Turn the heat down to medium then simmer until the onions are tender and the beer is nearly absorbed, 10-15 minutes.

Meanwhile, mix up the brat burger patties. That’s just 1lb ground pork mixed with 3/4 teaspoon each coriander, ground sage, dry mustard, and salt, and 1/4 teaspoon each dried rosemary, paprika, white pepper, and nutmeg. SO EASY!!!!

Form the mixture into four patties – they’ll be a little soft, but that’s ok – then spray the tops with nonstick spray and grill for 4-5 minutes per side. FYI, the way to get great grill marks is to heat your grill over high heat then turn it down to medium just before adding the patties!

Place the patties onto buns then top with a mountain of beer-braised caramelized onions, and dig in!

Description

Homemade Brat Burgers with Gluten-Free Beer-Braised Caramelized Onions are homemade brat patties (just pork and spices,) topped with luscious, gluten-free beer-spiked onions. You’ll be making this easy grilling recipe all summer long!

Ingredients

serves 4

  • 1lb ground pork
  • 3/4 teaspoon coriander
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground sage
  • 3/4 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed between your fingers
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 jumbo sweet onion
  • 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
  • 12oz (1 bottle) gluten-free beer (I used New Grist Pilsner)
  • 4 buns

Directions

  1. Heat extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions then saute until evenly caramelized, 10 minutes. Add beer, worcestershire sauce, and a little salt then bring to a boil. Turn heat down to medium then simmer until onions are tender and beer has nearly been absorbed, 10-15 minutes. Taste then add salt if necessary and set aside.
  2. While the onions are simmering, preheat grill on high heat for at least 10 minutes (I like to let my grill get to 400-450 degrees.) Combine pork and spices – coriander through nutmeg – then form mixture into 4 patties – patties will be soft, but that’s ok. Turn grill down to medium heat then spray tops of patties with nonstick spray. Place patties sprayed-side down on the grill then cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Place brat burgers onto buns then top with beer-braised caramelized onions and serve.

Notes

  • The fat content in ground pork can vary wildly, so don’t be surprised if your burgers shrink up a bit.

Can You Really Lose Weight With The Wu Yi Diet

I have to be honest, I had never heard of Wu Yi tea, much less a Wu Yi diet. Perhaps you have already heard of it, but if you haven’t then all you need to know to get up to speed is that Wu Yi is a blend of black and green tea. This blend is quite tasty and gives you the positive effects of the green tea with the familiarity of black tea (there are also some people who favorably compare the taste to coffee). When you drink Wu Yi, you don’t have to worry about the added sugar and found in other beverages like frappuccino, double mocha or hot chocolate; all of which add extra calories.

Wu Yi tea has actually been quite popular for a number of years, with many people swearing by the way a Wu Yi diet has taken off their extra pounds. Of course, there are also those who say that tea is over-rated and that anybody who tries to sell it as a weight loss elixir must be scamming people. Now, everybody is entitled to their opinion, and I’m not here to convince the naysayers. However, it is unfortunate that all of this conflicting information has only served to confuse the very people who could benefit the most from a Wu Yi diet.

The best way to clear up any confusion is to start with some basic information. Wu Yi tea is loaded with polyphenols which are compounds that aid in losing weight. It works by speeding up metabolism and that means more calories are burned. This is one of the main reasons why Wu Yi is so effective for weight loss. Additionally, the diet doesn’t require you to pop pills or starve yourself.

As with any other diet, there are pros and cons. Here are some you should be aware of:

PROS

– It’s easy. Simply eat sensibly and drink a few cups of Wu Yi tea each day.
– You get all of the health benefits of both green and black tea.
– Low cost. There is no need to get a prescription for medication, no need for costly surgical procedures, and you don’t have to buy expensive nutritional supplements.
– Health benefits. Green tea has an astounding array of health benefits, including lowering the risk of cancer, cleansing the liver, and aiding digestion (to name only a few).
– Good alternative for coffee drinkers that want to reduce how much caffeine they take in, but still want a bit of a boost.
– Free of fat, carbohydrates and calories.

CONS

– It still contains some caffeine, so those who are overly sensitive to it may not be able to try the Wu Yi diet.
– Even though some evidence suggests it may help reduce blood pressure, anybody with hypertension or heart concerns should talk to their doctor to make sure they can drink Wu Yi tea. In fact, it’s always a good idea for anybody to check with their doctor before starting a new diet, even if it’s as safe and effective as the Wu Yi diet.

Smell As Fresh As A Daisy

Well as Joliese is currently out of stock – I found this review of a tanner from someone with VERY pale skin – so I thought I would share it with you;  (Remember if your skin type is normal or olive it will be much faster than described below)

– “I was a little bit sceptical because I looked at their internet site and saw all these pictures of models and thought these girls often look so perfect? I don’t think they require a product like this. So, I decided to grab a tube mainly because now they provide a free of charge trial.  So I paid the normal shipping and handling (a few bucks) and then after two days I got the packet shipped right to my home.

So I took the tube and put on some of the lotion all over after ex-foliating.  That was all I had to do.  I didn’t see very much effect on my skin initially but one thing that is wonderful.  The cream doesn’t smell of chemicals – you may laugh at this but most of the other sunless tanning products I have tried prior to this had a bad smell and I didn’t want to use them simply because it was just too chemically oriented for me.  Idol tan smells very much like some nice citrus fruit and my boyfriend even asked me why I smell so fresh these days.  Ha 😉

But darker skin?  Nope, couldn’t see any changes.  But ok, that was just the very first day so I didn’t expect this would function like a magic cream so onto to the next day.  Exact same procedure.  Cream on skin and finished.  On day two, I looked in the mirror and I found I could see a slight change in my color.  My skin definitely looked darker, not as dark as I wanted it to be but it was darker.  From this day on I truly believed in the Idol Tan lotion!

To make a long story short, following three more days.  I had the skin color I really wanted to have. It may sound strange to others but for me a dream come true, normal darkening tanners streak for me or they come off in 2 days.  For me (with a very pale skin) this Idol Tan was amazing.  The attractiveness of the tan increasing over a few days meant the darker colour was more natural, didn’t look fake and of course was completely streak free.

So now all I’m doing is applying it once weekly just after a shower.  Sometimes I exfoliate, but to be honest, I don’t always have to, and the great thing is – it lasts for a while (unlike the previous stainers I had been using)

If you have the same issue like me (pale skin) – I actually encourage you to get the free trial of Idol Tan. It worked for me so I can’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be great for you.  Of course if don’t get on with it you’ll be able to send it back and all you’ve just lost is the money for delivery.  I feel this is totally worth it should you consider what it could change in your life, self-confidence and of course it will make you look younger ;-)”

I hope that give some insight into the product – let me know if you have any questions.

Tan Thin – What is it and how does it work?

Firstly its not a tanner!  It’s a thinning anti cellulite cream.  Once absorbed it uses the heat of the sun to produce a thermogenic reaction which melts fat at the skin level.  Through the absorption it shrinks the cells so that lipids are released and carried away in the bloodstream.

Applying it

Rub it on all round areas where you could get cellulite, the backs of thighs and arms for example.  Although the name implies that you should lie in the sun to activate it – its not necessary and in fact natural body heat will do the job.

If you do want to sun bathe – then its important to note there is no sunscreen in it.  The best approach is to rub it and let absorb, and then apply sunscreen

How long?

Before you see results – with daily applications you should notice results in 4 weeks.

Best Self Tanner for Streak Free Application

At any time of the year, you too can have a beautiful and deep rich tan. All it takes is a sunless tanning lotion or a really great cruise in the sun. A dark tanning lotion can also make the skin look more natural as well, and can help you feel young and healthy without having to go out in the sun. It’s possible to self apply such a lotion without leaving streaks, too.
Before going out to purchase a product for tanning your skin, consider what it is you want from your tan. Do you want to look sun kissed, golden, bronzed? Or are you looking to sport and show off a deep rich Caribbean colour? Once you know what you want from your tan, it’s time to buy the right formula.

Best Self Tanner

Products that have thick creams or come as a gel are perfect for easy application.  A gel or thick cream is easier to apply and there is less chance of run-off going to other body parts or getting on clothing and causing a stain. Many people don’t intend to apply suntan lotion to their armpits or upper chest, so that their tans will look more natural.
When it comes to sunless tanning creams and lotions, have a shower first.  It’s important when applying any tan lotion that you exfoliate and get rid of the dead skin cells that often coat the body. Use a body polishing bathing soap rather than just a loofa.  You’ll want to apply any sort of tan lotion to a fresh layer of skin.
The best self tanner will come with a quality tinting agent called DHA in it’s formula. This helps to make sure that you can see where you are applying your lotion. It’s best to apply the lotion in one smooth motion, rather than going over the same area accidentally and causing streaking.
When applying your lotion, rub it around in a circular motion. Start with the tops of your feet and work your way slowly up the body.  Do each individual body part at a time, rather than trying to apply the cream quickly all over and hoping to go over it again later.  Some products work just fine if you haven’t shaved before using them, while others may need your body to be as smooth as possible.
One of the biggest concerns of course when it comes to tanning lotions is that of streaking.  However, some products actually streak while they are setting because they have a certain thickness to them or a special chemical agent that just streaks.  Joliese and Idol tan are the best self tanner products I know that won’t streak at all.  If you do get any that still appear – a buffer or a body polishing cloth will smooth it off.  (Only do it when its dry)
Using the best self tanner lotion or any other tanning product often means you should be checking to see if the product includes a moisturizing agent like in Joliese or Idol tan. The mosturizer is really important for your skin, but also to ensure that the tan is gradual and natural.  The last thing you want is for to be obvious that you’ve just just applied some.  Take your time, build up gradually and with either Joliese or Idol tan, you can be confident of being streak free.
